Metro
Rockville is served by three major airports, Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA), Washington Dulles International (IAD), and Baltimore/Washington International (BWI). DCA is closest and offers the easiest public transit access. IAD and BWI are great alternatives especially if you have access to a car (both have public transportation options but not quite as easy as Reagan (DCA).
NOTE: the traffic in our area is some of the worst in the country. It can be particularly bad between Virginia (including Dulles Airport) and Montgomery County. It's a bit better coming from DCA or BWI.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA): Distance to Rockville: ~17 miles (about 30-45 minutes by car, add at least 30 minutes if you are traveling during rush hour). Public Transit: 45 to 60 minutes by Metro (Yellow or Blue line) from the airport, transfer to the Red Line at Gallery Place, and ride it straight into downtown Rockville.
Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD): Distance to Rockville: ~22-28 miles (about 30-50 minutes by car via the Dulles Access Road and I-495, add 45 minutes during rush hour). Public Transit takes approximately 90 minutes. Take the Silver Line Metro from the airport to Metro Center and transfer to the Red Line to get into Rockville.
Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI): Distance to Rockville: ~35-40 miles (about 50–65 minutes by car). Public Transit: About 90-minutes: MARC Train (Penn Line) from BWI to Washington Union Station, then switch to the Metro Red Line heading north to Rockville. Another great option is the Maryland Express Bus which takes about 60 minutes from BWI to the Shady Grove Metro station. Currently $7.00 one way, cash only).
